Middle Years Programme (MYP)
The IB Middle Years Programme, for students in grade 6 to 10, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

Three fundamental concepts underpin the Middle Years Programme:

Holistic Learning - all knowledge is interrelated and the curriculum should promote the development of the whole person, whose attributes are described in the Learner Profile.  Through the Areas of Interaction, students develop the skills of inquiry and understand the differences and similarities between different approaches to human knowledge.

Intercultural Awareness – the school community encourages and promotes international mindedness by engaging with and exploring other cultures.  Students will consider issues from multiple perspectives and provide opportunities for developing students’ attitudes, knowledge, concepts and skills as they learn about their own and others’ social, national and ethnic cultures. It not only fosters tolerance and respect but also leads to empathy and understanding.

Communication - open and effective communication is essential to international understanding; individuals who understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes.
Areas of Interaction

Within the subject courses throughout the MYP, students are immersed in and challenged by the issues and skills inherent in each of the Areas of Interaction.  The areas of interaction (AOI) give the MYP its distinctive core and provide a teaching framework that focuses on attitudes, values and skills.  These are not academic subjects but do provide a framework by which the students can connect their knowledge gained in the various disciplines to the real world and between subjects.

What is the Primary Years Programme?

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six
transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.

The Six Transdisciplinary Themes
Who we are - an inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Where we are in place and time -an inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationship between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
How we express ourselves - an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
How the world works - an inquiry into the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
How we organize ourselves - an inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
Sharing the planet - an inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things; communities and the relationship within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
